An iPhone 6s for 2024

Dreamscape Issue 3

Dance in Italy by Édouard Alexandre Sain, unknown date

Hello, Internet!

I’ve been using an iPhone 6s as my daily driver for the past month. In this issue, I want to reflect on why this has been great.

Enjoy!

Motivation

Like many people, I’ve become aware of how much time we spend on our smartphones.

In an attempt to reduce my own screen time, I decided on trying an older iPhone with a very minimal setup of apps.

Why the iPhone 6s

I work as an app developer, and have access to a lot of test devices through work. We had an iPhone 6s laying around that I thought could make a good daily driver.

The following setup could very well be achieved with a new iPhone 16 Pro Max, but there’s something fun with using older devices, which is why I decided to use the iPhone 6s we had laying around.

Here is a list of features I want in my phone:

  • Phone
  • Messages
  • 4G Hotspot

Here is a list of features that is nice to have:

  • Maps
  • BankID
  • 2FA
  • Citybike App
  • Ryde
  • Radio

Here is a list of things I do not care about:

  • Camera

To “dumb down” the device, I’ve gone ahead and blocked Safari from the Allowed Apps list under Content & Privacy Restrictions.

Attempting a battery upgrade and cracking the screen

I was exited to receive a replacement battery for the phone, as the battery was draining quickly, even with minimal use.

While attempting to remove the screen, I accidentally broke it.

The phone still functions, but I’m now looking for another used iPhone 6s which I can install the fresh battery in. Once that is done, I think I’ll have a good and minimal daily driver for the time to come.
