Why Privacy Matters by Neil Richards

A much-needed corrective on what privacy is, why it matters, and how we can protect in an age when so many believe that the concept is dead.

Why Privacy Matters is a book about privacy.

It is written by Neil Richards, a professor in law, and parts of the book read dry as toast.

But, behind all the law citations are a lot of well reasoned thoughts and arguments explaining why privacy matters, and the actions both the individual, and society as a whole, can take to better protect this instrumental right.

Most of the big tech companies making money though targeted advertising are American, and a lot of the laws these companies follow are based on the American constitution.

Neil Richards gives a lot of good examples on how this is not a modern enough approach of protecting end users.

There are a lot of comparisons between this and the European countries which follow GDPR, a much more modern set of laws for privacy regulation.

I recommend giving it a read!
