Hello, Internet!

Today I’ll write about domain names.

Enjoy!

Choosing a domain name is difficult

I like short and recognizable domain names.

This makes finding a good domain name difficult.

The first domain I bought was isaks.io. I thought it ticket both of those boxes, but it proved to be difficult to pronounce. I had to spell it out loud when giving out my email verbally.

I was lucky and had saved a search on isak.me, which became available two years ago. I’m very happy with it and plan on using it for forever.

A couple of other domain names I own are datamus.no and muldyr.no.

What makes a good domain name

For a personal website, a combination of firstname + lastname + .com is great.

An even shorter domain name like firstname + .com is even better.

But, it is most lightly taken.

This is where the endless options of different TLDs come in.

TLDs (Top-level domains) are the last part of the domain name, like .com, .org, .io, .beer, etc.

.com, .org and .net are among probably the most recognizable, but there are a bunch of other TLDs available.

Country codes are my favorite TLDs.

They are short and show a bit of personality.

My dream domain name would be isak.no, but it is used by a Norwegian organization, and it won’t be available anytime soon.

My good friend Nuutti has the domain name nuutti.no which is super sick.

Some country code TLDs have become popular for people outside the respective countries as well.

An example of this is the .me domain, which I currently use, which is the TLD of Montenegro.

While a lot of country code TLDs require residency to get the domain, there are quite a few that does not hold this requirement.

Domain names like .me (Montenegro) and .io (British Indian Ocean Territory) are up for grabs for everyone.

Last year, Anguilla, which holds the .ai TLD, made 20% of it’s revenue through domain name registrations, as everyone wanted to register names for their AI businesses.

Examples

Now onto examples. I will share a random list of domain names I like. They all use different TLDs, some being country codes, some being city codes, some being generic TLDs:

You can also combine the levels of a domain to create a domain hack.

And including a subdomain:

On subdomains

I’ve had a hard time deciding on whether to use subdomains or not for my personal website.

I have the following:

garden.isak.me

photos.isak.me

blog.isak.me

Having them on separate subdomain makes it easy to separate different projects built with different tech stacks.

But I might switch to having everything on isak.me later.

In the end it does not really matter.
